Couldn't load pickup availability
Rich colour, quick growth and trailing stems for days, Tradescantia ‘Purpusii’ is made for shelves and hanging displays.
Its pointed foliage combines deep green and olive tones with flashes of burgundy and purple, with particularly rich colour hiding beneath the leaves. As the stems grow, they tumble over the edge of the pot to create a wonderfully full, slightly wild-looking cascade.
‘Purpusii’ is also satisfyingly quick to grow. Give it plenty of bright indirect light, let the upper layer of its growing mix dry between drinks and don't be afraid to give those wandering stems a trim to keep the plant looking full.

OUR THOUGHTS
This is a plant for anyone who enjoys visible progress. Give ‘Purpusii’ good light and it'll happily send stems wandering over the side of its pot, carrying that brilliant mix of green, burgundy and purple with them. Fast-growing, easy to propagate and just unruly enough to have some personality.
GROW WITH CONFIDENCE
Looking After Your Plant
Watering
Allow the upper layer of the growing medium to begin drying before watering thoroughly, then let excess water drain freely. Avoid keeping the pot permanently wet, but don't repeatedly leave it completely bone dry for long periods either.
Light
Give ‘Purpusii’ plenty of bright, indirect light to encourage compact growth and richer foliage colouring. It can tolerate softer light, but stems may become more stretched and the colours less pronounced. Some gentle morning or evening sun can be beneficial, but protect it from prolonged harsh midday sunlight.
Humidity & Temperature
Average household humidity is generally suitable. ‘Purpusii’ appreciates some humidity but doesn't usually need particularly tropical conditions. Good airflow is helpful, particularly around dense foliage.
Feeding
Feed with a balanced houseplant fertiliser around once a month during active growth in spring and summer, following the manufacturer's instructions. Reduce feeding during autumn and winter as growth slows.
Repotting & Growth
‘Purpusii’ is a fast-growing trailing plant and can quickly produce long stems. Repot when noticeably root-bound using a light, well-draining growing mix. Don't be afraid to trim longer or sparse stems, as regular pruning can encourage a fuller, bushier plant. Healthy stem cuttings also root readily and can be planted back into the pot to bulk it out.
Pet Safety
Tradescantia ‘Purpusii’ isn't one we'd class as pet safe. Its sap can cause irritation, particularly after repeated contact, and chewing the foliage may cause gastrointestinal upset. Keep it somewhere curious pets can't easily reach and contact your vet for advice if you're concerned about ingestion or a reaction.
A NOTE FROM US
Don't be frightened of giving this one a haircut. Tradescantias can start looking a little leggy as those stems race away, and trimming them back encourages fresh, fuller growth. Even better, pop the cuttings straight back into the pot and you've essentially bullied it into becoming bushier.
