A marbled twist on the much-loved Chinese Money Plant, Pilea ‘Mojito’ produces those familiar round, coin-shaped leaves with beautifully mottled shades of green.

Each leaf develops its own mix of darker green, soft lime and speckled marbling, meaning no two are quite the same. The foliage sits on slender stems emerging from the centre of the plant, gradually creating that wonderfully quirky Pilea shape as it grows.

Compact, unusual and easy to find a home for, ‘Mojito’ is perfect for shelves, desks and windowsills with plenty of bright indirect light. Give it an occasional turn to keep the growth balanced and let the soil partially dry between drinks.

OUR THOUGHTS

The classic Chinese Money Plant shape, but someone has apparently taken a tiny paintbrush to every leaf. The mottled greens make each new leaf slightly different from the last, while it stays compact enough to squeeze into that suspicious little gap on the shelf you definitely weren't saving for another plant.

GROW WITH CONFIDENCE

Looking After Your Plant

Watering

Allow the upper few centimetres of the growing medium to dry before watering thoroughly, then allow excess water to drain freely. Avoid keeping the roots permanently wet or leaving the pot sitting in standing water. Reduce watering during cooler, darker periods when the plant is growing more slowly.

Light

Give Pilea ‘Mojito’ plenty of bright, indirect light to support healthy growth and maintain its attractive mottled colouring. Some gentle morning or evening sun can be beneficial, but avoid prolonged harsh direct sunlight. Lower light can result in slower, more stretched growth and less impressive colouring.

Humidity & Temperature

Average household humidity is generally suitable. Pilea ‘Mojito’ doesn't usually need particularly high humidity, although it appreciates stable temperatures and good airflow. Keep it away from cold draughts and very hot radiators.

Feeding

Feed with a balanced houseplant fertiliser around once a month during active growth in spring and summer, following the manufacturer's instructions. Reduce or stop feeding during autumn and winter when growth naturally slows.

Repotting & Growth

Repot when the plant becomes noticeably root-bound, moving up only slightly in pot size and using a light, airy and well-draining houseplant mix. Pilea naturally grows towards the light, so rotating the pot regularly can help encourage more even growth. Established plants may also produce little offsets or ‘pups’ around the base, which can eventually be separated and grown into new plants.

Pet Safety

Pilea ‘Mojito’ is considered non-toxic to cats and dogs, making it a lovely option for pet-friendly homes. As with any houseplant, it's still best to discourage enthusiastic nibbling or digging.

A NOTE FROM US

Give this one a little quarter-turn every so often. Pileas have absolutely no shame about leaning towards the nearest decent light source, and rotating the pot helps keep that wonderfully wonky collection of coin-shaped leaves growing more evenly.
