Peperomia caperata ‘Rosso’

Couldn't load pickup availability
Compact, colourful and packed with texture, Peperomia ‘Rosso’ produces beautifully rippled green leaves with a rather brilliant secret underneath.
Turn the foliage over and you'll find rich red to burgundy undersides, creating flashes of colour throughout the plant as its pointed leaves grow outwards from the centre. Its naturally compact habit makes it perfect for desks, shelves and smaller spaces where a giant tropical plant would be rather inconvenient.
Give it bright indirect light, let the growing medium partially dry between drinks and ‘Rosso’ will happily stay small while producing plenty of wonderfully textured foliage.

OUR THOUGHTS
From above, it's a beautifully textured little green plant. Then you catch the underside of a leaf and suddenly there's a flash of deep burgundy red. The compact size makes it ridiculously easy to find a home for too, which is dangerous information if you're already running out of shelf space.
GROW WITH CONFIDENCE
Looking After Your Plant
Watering
Allow the growing medium to partially dry before watering thoroughly, then let excess water drain freely. Peperomias store some moisture in their fleshy foliage and generally cope better with being slightly too dry than permanently wet. Avoid allowing the pot to sit in standing water.
Light
Give ‘Rosso’ plenty of bright, indirect light to maintain healthy, compact growth and strong foliage colour. It can tolerate somewhat softer light, although growth may slow. Avoid prolonged harsh direct sunlight, which can scorch the leaves.
Humidity & Temperature
Average household humidity is generally suitable for ‘Rosso’. It appreciates warmth and stable conditions but doesn't usually require the very high humidity demanded by some tropical houseplants. Keep it away from cold draughts and hot radiators.
Feeding
Feed lightly with a balanced houseplant fertiliser around once a month during active growth in spring and summer, following the manufacturer's instructions. Reduce or stop feeding during autumn and winter when growth slows.
Repotting & Growth
‘Rosso’ stays relatively compact and has a small root system, so it doesn't need frequent repotting. Wait until it is noticeably root-bound before moving it into a pot only slightly larger than the current one. Use a light, airy and well-draining growing mix, and avoid oversized pots that can remain wet for too long.
Pet Safety
Peperomia caperata ‘Rosso’ is generally considered non-toxic to cats and dogs, making it a great option for pet-friendly homes. As with any houseplant, it's still sensible to discourage pets from chewing or damaging the foliage.
A NOTE FROM US
Rosso's little root system is the bit to remember. It doesn't need an enormous pot or constantly wet compost. Give it bright indirect light, let the growing mix partially dry between drinks and resist the urge to repot it into a mansion.
