Feathery, full and gloriously green, Nephrolepis exaltata ‘Sonata’ is a beautiful Boston Fern with masses of softly arching foliage.
Fresh fronds emerge from the centre and gradually create a dense fountain of greenery, making ‘Sonata’ particularly lovely on a plant stand, shelf or somewhere its foliage has room to spread.
This one likes life a little more humid than your average houseplant. Keep it away from drying radiators, give it bright indirect light and don't allow the growing medium to completely dry out, and it'll reward you with beautifully lush new growth.

OUR THOUGHTS
Sometimes you don't need variegation, silver splashes or enormous leaves. You just need an unreasonable amount of green. Sonata produces masses of soft, feathery fronds that gradually turn the whole plant into a wonderfully lush fountain of foliage.
GROW WITH CONFIDENCE
Looking After Your Plant
Watering
Keep the growing medium consistently lightly moist, allowing the surface to begin drying slightly before watering again. Avoid allowing the root ball to completely dry out for prolonged periods, but don't leave the pot sitting in standing water either. Watering may need to be more frequent during warm, bright weather.
Light
Bright, indirect light is ideal for healthy, lush growth. ‘Sonata’ can tolerate somewhat softer light, but avoid deep shade and prolonged harsh direct sunlight, which can scorch and dry its delicate fronds.
Humidity & Temperature
‘Sonata’ appreciates high humidity and can struggle in very hot, dry air. Bathrooms and kitchens with suitable light can work particularly well. Keep it away from radiators and drying draughts, while still allowing good airflow around the foliage.
Feeding
Feed lightly with a balanced houseplant fertiliser around once a month during active growth in spring and summer, following the manufacturer's instructions. Ferns can be sensitive to excessive fertiliser, so avoid overfeeding and reduce feeding during autumn and winter.
Repotting & Growth
‘Sonata’ develops into a dense clump of arching fronds, with fresh growth emerging from the centre of the plant. Repot when noticeably root-bound, moving up only slightly in pot size and using a moisture-retentive but well-draining houseplant mix. Older brown or damaged fronds can be removed cleanly at the base to keep the plant looking fresh.
Pet Safety
Nephrolepis exaltata ‘Sonata’ is generally considered non-toxic to cats and dogs, making it a lovely choice for pet-friendly homes. As with any houseplant, it's still sensible to discourage pets from chewing or damaging the foliage.
A NOTE FROM US
The quickest route to a grumpy Boston Fern is hot, bone-dry air. Keep Sonata lightly moist, give it decent humidity and park it well away from the radiator. If you've got a bright bathroom, this is exactly the sort of plant that'll appreciate it.
