Lush, leafy and unapologetically tropical, Musa ‘Tropicana’ brings huge paddle-shaped leaves and fast-growing jungle greenery into the home.

New leaves unfurl from the centre of the plant and gradually build an impressive upright display, giving ‘Tropicana’ plenty of impact even while relatively young. In the right conditions, banana plants are wonderfully enthusiastic growers, so this is a brilliant choice if watching new leaves appear is half the fun for you.

Give it lots of light, warmth, consistent moisture and regular feeding during the growing season and it'll happily get on with turning its corner of the room considerably greener.

OUR THOUGHTS

It's difficult to beat a banana plant when a room needs an injection of instant jungle. The huge leaves make an impact from day one, while the speed of new growth means there's nearly always something happening. Give it enough space and Tropicana will happily become part plant, part furniture.

GROW WITH CONFIDENCE

Looking After Your Plant

Watering

Keep the growing medium relatively evenly moist during active growth, allowing the surface to begin drying before watering thoroughly again. Banana plants can use plenty of water during warm, bright weather, but the roots should never remain permanently saturated. Reduce watering during cooler and darker periods.

Light

Give Musa ‘Tropicana’ a very bright position with plenty of indirect light. Some gentle direct morning or later-afternoon sunshine can be beneficial, but introduce stronger sunlight gradually. Insufficient light can result in slower and weaker growth.

Humidity & Temperature

Musa ‘Tropicana’ appreciates medium to high humidity, particularly while producing its large new leaves. Keep it away from cold draughts and drying radiators, and provide good airflow around the foliage. Its broad leaves also benefit from an occasional wipe to remove accumulated dust.

Feeding

Banana plants are hungry growers. Feed regularly with a balanced houseplant fertiliser during active growth in spring and summer, following the manufacturer's instructions. Reduce feeding significantly during autumn and winter as growth slows.

Repotting & Growth

Musa ‘Tropicana’ is a vigorous upright grower and can become a substantial plant in good conditions. Repot once noticeably root-bound, moving up gradually in pot size and using a rich, moisture-retentive but well-draining growing mix. Banana plants can also produce pups around the base, which may eventually be separated once well established.

Pet Safety

Musa ‘Tropicana’ is generally considered non-toxic to cats and dogs, making it a good choice for pet-friendly homes. As with any houseplant, it's still sensible to discourage pets from chewing or damaging the foliage.

A NOTE FROM US

This is not one for the gloomy corner. Give Tropicana loads of light, warmth and regular drinks during active growth and it'll reward you with those enormous fresh leaves. Don't worry about the occasional split either. Banana leaves naturally tear along their veins, so a few battle scars are completely normal.
