Big leaves, bold growth and probably one of the most recognisable houseplants around, Monstera deliciosa is a proper indoor jungle classic.

Young plants begin with glossy, heart-shaped green leaves, but as the plant matures in good conditions, new foliage can develop the dramatic splits and holes that make Monsteras so distinctive.

Naturally a climber, Monstera deliciosa will happily grow upwards with a moss pole or other support, developing increasingly impressive foliage along the way. Give it bright indirect light, an airy growing mix and enough room to stretch its legs and this one can become a seriously impressive statement plant.

OUR THOUGHTS

There's a reason this one's become a houseplant icon. Monstera deliciosa starts relatively innocent and then gradually produces bigger, bolder and increasingly fenestrated foliage. Give it something to climb and enough space and it can go from little green houseplant to full indoor-jungle territory surprisingly quickly.

GROW WITH CONFIDENCE

Looking After Your Plant

Watering

Allow the upper few centimetres of the growing medium to dry before watering thoroughly, then allow excess water to drain freely. Avoid keeping the roots permanently wet or allowing the pot to sit in standing water. Water less frequently during cooler, darker periods when growth slows.

Light

Give Monstera deliciosa plenty of bright, indirect light to encourage strong growth and increasingly mature foliage. It can tolerate lower light levels, but growth may become slower and new leaves may develop fewer fenestrations. Gentle morning or evening sunshine can be beneficial, but avoid suddenly exposing the foliage to prolonged harsh direct sun.

Humidity & Temperature

Average household humidity is usually suitable, although Monstera deliciosa appreciates medium to higher humidity. Warm, stable conditions and good airflow will support healthy growth. Keep it away from cold draughts and very hot radiators.

Feeding

Feed with a balanced houseplant fertiliser around once a month during active growth in spring and summer, following the manufacturer's instructions. Reduce feeding during autumn and winter when growth naturally slows.

Repotting & Growth

Monstera deliciosa is naturally a climbing plant and can become large as it matures. Give it a moss pole, coir pole or other sturdy support if you'd like to encourage upright growth and larger, more mature foliage. Repot when noticeably root-bound, moving up only slightly in pot size and using a chunky, airy and well-draining growing mix. Aerial roots can be guided towards the support or growing medium rather than routinely cutting them off.

Pet Safety

Monstera deliciosa is not considered pet safe. Its tissues contain insoluble calcium oxalate crystals which can cause irritation if chewed or ingested, so keep it away from cats, dogs and other curious plant-nibblers. If you suspect your pet has eaten part of the plant, contact your vet for advice.

A NOTE FROM US

Those famous holes aren't guaranteed on every leaf, particularly while the plant is young. Give your Monstera plenty of bright indirect light, something sturdy to climb and time to mature. And don't panic about the aerial roots. They're supposed to be there.
