Kalanchoe thyrsiflora - Paddle Plant
Kalanchoe thyrsiflora - Paddle Plant
Couldn't load pickup availability
Chunky, architectural and wonderfully colourful in good light, Kalanchoe thyrsiflora is a striking succulent grown for its stacks of broad, paddle-shaped leaves.
The fleshy foliage forms bold rosettes in shades of green to grey-green, with the leaf edges developing beautiful red tones when the plant receives plenty of light. Its water-storing leaves also make this a brilliant choice for anyone who'd rather their houseplants weren't waiting beside the watering can with a stopwatch.
Give it a very bright position, free-draining soil and plenty of drying time between drinks and it'll happily get on with being one of the chunkier characters in the collection.

OUR THOUGHTS
It's essentially a stack of enormous succulent pancakes, and we're completely fine with that. The broad leaves create a brilliant architectural shape, while strong light can paint the edges in shades of red. Easy-going watering requirements make it even better.
GROW WITH CONFIDENCE
Looking After Your Plant
Watering
Allow the growing medium to dry thoroughly between waterings, then water deeply and allow all excess moisture to drain away. Its thick leaves store water, so underwatering is generally less risky than keeping the roots permanently wet. Water considerably less frequently during cooler, darker periods.
Light
Give Paddle Plant a very bright position. Several hours of gentle direct sunlight can help produce strong, compact growth and encourage the characteristic red colouring around the leaf margins. Introduce plants to stronger direct sunlight gradually to reduce the risk of scorching.
Humidity & Temperature
Normal to low household humidity suits Paddle Plant well. It doesn't require the high humidity preferred by many tropical houseplants and benefits from good airflow around its foliage. Avoid consistently damp, humid conditions combined with wet soil.
Feeding
Feed lightly during spring and summer with a cactus or succulent fertiliser, following the manufacturer's instructions. It doesn't require heavy feeding, and fertiliser can be reduced or stopped during autumn and winter.
Repotting & Growth
Paddle Plant grows as a rosette of thick, fleshy leaves and may gradually produce offsets around the parent plant. Repot only when needed, moving up slightly in pot size and using a very free-draining cactus or succulent mix. Good drainage is particularly important, as the fleshy roots and leaves don't appreciate remaining wet for long periods.
Pet Safety
Kalanchoe thyrsiflora is not considered pet safe. Kalanchoe species can be toxic if ingested, so keep this plant safely out of reach of cats, dogs and other pets. If you suspect your pet has eaten part of the plant, contact your vet for advice.
A NOTE FROM US
Those chunky leaves are basically little water stores, so step away from the watering can until the soil has properly dried. This one also wants considerably more light than many of our tropical houseplants. A properly bright windowsill can help keep the growth compact and bring out those gorgeous red leaf edges.
