Big leaves, bold shape and just the right amount of silver splash, Hoya obovata is a wonderfully chunky member of the Hoya family.
Its thick, rounded green leaves grow along long, flexible vines, often developing scattered silver markings that make every leaf slightly different. Let the vines trail naturally or give them a support to climb and wind around as the plant matures.
With plenty of bright indirect light and the right care, mature plants can also produce beautiful clusters of pale, star-shaped flowers with contrasting pink centres. Tough foliage, wandering vines and flowers thrown in for good measure. There's a lot to like about this one.

OUR THOUGHTS
Some Hoyas are delicate and intricate. Obovata has apparently decided to grow great big circular leaves instead. We love the chunky foliage, occasional flashes of silver and those long vines that can either trail or be persuaded around a support. Mature plants throwing out clusters of starry flowers is a rather lovely bonus.
GROW WITH CONFIDENCE
Looking After Your Plant
Watering
Allow much of the growing medium to dry before watering thoroughly, then allow excess water to drain away completely. Those thick leaves store moisture, making Hoya obovata considerably happier with a little drying time than with permanently wet roots. Reduce watering during cooler and darker periods.
Light
Give Hoya obovata plenty of bright, indirect light to encourage healthy growth and support flowering as the plant matures. Gentle morning or evening sunshine can be beneficial, but introduce stronger light gradually and protect the foliage from prolonged harsh midday sun through glass.
Humidity & Temperature
Hoya obovata appreciates medium humidity but generally adapts well to normal household conditions. Warmth and good airflow are more important than trying to create extremely high humidity. Keep it away from cold draughts and prolonged chilly conditions.
Feeding
Feed lightly with a balanced houseplant fertiliser during active growth in spring and summer, following the manufacturer's instructions. Reduce or stop feeding during autumn and winter as growth slows. Avoid overfeeding.
Repotting & Growth
Hoya obovata produces long, flexible vines that can be allowed to trail or trained around a trellis or other support. Hoyas generally prefer being slightly snug in their pots, so don't rush to repot. When noticeably root-bound, move up only slightly in pot size and use a chunky, airy and free-draining growing mix. Avoid removing old flower spurs, or peduncles, as the plant can flower from them again.
Pet Safety
Hoya obovata is generally considered non-toxic to cats and dogs, making it a good option for pet-friendly homes. As with any houseplant, it's still sensible to discourage pets from chewing or damaging the foliage.
A NOTE FROM US
Those chunky leaves are your clue with watering. Obovata stores moisture in its foliage, so resist loving it to death with the watering can. Give it an airy mix, plenty of bright indirect light and let the growing medium dry well between drinks. And don't chop off those funny little old flower spurs. They may bloom again.
