The Houseplant Guy
Hoya linearis
Hoya linearis
Couldn't load pickup availability
Long, cascading and wonderfully unusual, Hoya linearis looks rather different from the thick, glossy-leaved Hoyas you may already know.
Its slender stems are covered in masses of narrow, almost needle-like green leaves, eventually creating an incredible curtain of foliage as they spill from a hanging pot. Mature, happy plants can also produce clusters of small, star-shaped white flowers with a beautiful fragrance.
Hoya linearis appreciates plenty of bright indirect light, an airy growing mix and slightly more consistent moisture than some of its thicker-leaved Hoya relatives. Give those stems room to tumble and this one becomes a spectacular hanging plant.

OUR THOUGHTS
Some plants trail. Hoya linearis practically grows curtains. Its incredibly fine foliage pours over the edge of the pot in long green strands, giving it a completely different texture from almost anything else in a Hoya collection. And when a mature plant adds clusters of little white flowers to all of that? Ridiculous. In the best possible way.
GROW WITH CONFIDENCE
Looking After Your Plant
Watering
Water when the growing medium has partially dried, then water thoroughly and allow excess moisture to drain freely. Hoya linearis has finer foliage than many thick-leaved Hoyas and generally prefers not to remain completely dry for prolonged periods. Aim for a cycle of watering followed by partial drying rather than permanently wet soil or repeated severe drought.
Light
Give Hoya linearis plenty of bright, indirect light to encourage dense growth and support flowering as the plant matures. Gentle morning or evening sunlight can be beneficial, but protect its finer foliage from prolonged harsh midday sun through glass.
Humidity & Temperature
Hoya linearis appreciates medium to higher humidity and good airflow. It generally enjoys slightly cooler, airy conditions compared with some tropical Hoyas, so avoid very hot, stagnant positions and keep it away from radiators and cold draughts.
Feeding
Feed lightly with a balanced houseplant fertiliser during active growth in spring and summer, following the manufacturer's instructions. Reduce feeding during autumn and winter when growth slows. Avoid excessive feeding, which isn't necessary for healthy growth.
Repotting & Growth
Hoya linearis naturally develops long, cascading stems and is at its best when allowed to trail freely from a hanging planter or high shelf. It generally prefers being slightly snug in its pot, so don't rush to repot. When it does become noticeably root-bound, move up only slightly in pot size and use a chunky, airy, free-draining growing mix. Avoid unnecessary pruning of healthy flowering stems and old flower spurs, as Hoyas can flower repeatedly from the same peduncles.
Pet Safety
Hoya linearis is generally considered non-toxic to cats and dogs, making it a good option for pet-friendly homes. As with any houseplant, it's still sensible to discourage pets from chewing or pulling at the foliage.
A NOTE FROM US
Don't treat this one exactly like a chunky, thick-leaved Hoya. Linearis has much finer foliage and appreciates a little more consistency with watering. Give it bright indirect light, good airflow and an airy growing mix, then find somewhere high enough to let those extraordinary stems do their thing.
