Softly coloured but beautifully striking, Calathea ‘Royal Standard’ combines deep green leaf margins with broad silvery-green centres, finished with a delicate wash of blush pink.
Rich burgundy stems and leaf undersides add another layer of colour, creating a plant that looks completely different depending on the angle. Like other members of the prayer plant family, its foliage can gently change position throughout the day as it responds to the light.

OUR THOUGHTS
It's the layers of colour that got us. Deep green frames a huge silvery centre with the softest blush of pink, then you turn a leaf over and find rich burgundy underneath. It's one of those plants that looks understated from across the room and gets considerably more interesting the closer you get.
GROW WITH CONFIDENCE
Looking After Your Plant
Watering
Keep the growing medium lightly and consistently moist, allowing the surface to begin drying before watering again. Avoid both prolonged drought and permanently saturated soil. Calatheas can be sensitive to minerals in tap water, so rainwater or filtered water can be helpful if persistent browning or crispy leaf edges develop.
Light
Give it plenty of bright, indirect light to support healthy growth and maintain the beautiful contrast between its green, silver and pink foliage. Avoid harsh direct sunlight, which can scorch the leaves and fade their softer colouring.
Humidity & Temperature
This Calathea appreciates high humidity and warm, stable conditions. Dry air can contribute to crispy leaf edges, so keep it away from radiators, cold draughts and sudden temperature changes. Good airflow is still important alongside higher humidity.
Feeding
Feed with a balanced houseplant fertiliser around once a month during active growth in spring and summer, following the manufacturer's instructions. Calatheas can be sensitive to excess fertiliser, so avoid overfeeding and reduce or stop feeding during autumn and winter.
Repotting & Growth
This Calathea develops into a full, clumping plant with new foliage emerging from the base. Repot when noticeably root-bound, moving up only slightly in pot size and using a light, moisture-retentive but well-draining houseplant mix. Remove old, yellowing or badly damaged leaves at the base when needed.
Pet Safety
Calatheas are generally considered non-toxic to cats and dogs, making this a lovely option for pet-friendly homes. As with any houseplant, it's still best to discourage pets from chewing or damaging the foliage.
A NOTE FROM US
This one's colouring is much softer than some of its louder Calathea relatives, and that's exactly what makes it so lovely. Give it bright indirect light, warmth and plenty of humidity, and aim to keep the soil lightly moist without leaving the roots sitting wet.
