Big, beautifully striped and wonderfully lush, Calathea orbifolia is loved for its enormous rounded leaves, patterned with sweeping bands of silver-green and deeper green.

As the plant matures, those impressive leaves create a full, tropical display that can become a real statement without relying on flowers or flashy variegation. Like other prayer plants, its foliage can gently shift position throughout the day in response to changing light.

Orbifolia appreciates a little consistency when it comes to warmth, humidity and watering, but those incredible oversized leaves make the extra attention thoroughly worthwhile.

OUR THOUGHTS

Some plants need wild colours to make an impact. Orbifolia just grows enormous silver-striped leaves and calls the job done. We love the softer shades of green, the broad sweeping stripes and the way a mature plant develops into a huge, beautifully leafy display. It's calm-looking foliage on a decidedly not-small scale.

GROW WITH CONFIDENCE

Looking After Your Plant

Watering

Keep the growing medium lightly and consistently moist, allowing the surface to begin drying before watering again. Avoid both prolonged drought and permanently saturated soil. Orbifolia can be sensitive to minerals in tap water, so rainwater or filtered water can be helpful if persistent browning or crispy leaf edges develop.

Light

Give Calathea orbifolia plenty of bright, indirect light to support strong growth and maintain its beautiful silver-green patterning. Avoid harsh direct sunlight, which can scorch the foliage and fade its markings. It can tolerate somewhat softer light, although growth is likely to become slower.

Humidity & Temperature

Calathea orbifolia appreciates high humidity and warm, stable conditions. Dry air can contribute to brown or crispy leaf edges, particularly on those enormous leaves. Keep it away from radiators, cold draughts and sudden temperature changes, and provide good airflow alongside higher humidity.

Feeding

Feed with a balanced houseplant fertiliser around once a month during active growth in spring and summer, following the manufacturer's instructions. Calatheas can be sensitive to excess fertiliser, so avoid overfeeding and reduce or stop feeding during autumn and winter.

Repotting & Growth

Calathea orbifolia develops into a full, clumping plant, with new leaves emerging from the base and gradually increasing in size as the plant matures. Repot when noticeably root-bound, moving up only slightly in pot size and using a light, moisture-retentive but well-draining houseplant mix. Remove old, yellowing or badly damaged foliage at the base when needed.

Pet Safety

Calathea orbifolia is generally considered non-toxic to cats and dogs, making it a great option for pet-friendly homes. As with any houseplant, it's still best to discourage pets from chewing or damaging the foliage.

A NOTE FROM US

Orbifolia has enormous leaves, and enormous leaves are very good at telling you when something isn't quite right. Keep things consistent: lightly moist soil, good humidity, warmth and plenty of indirect light. If the edges start turning crispy, we'd check humidity and water quality before reaching for more fertiliser.
