Bold, beautifully patterned and wonderfully tropical, Calathea ‘Medallion’ is grown for its spectacular rounded foliage, decorated with layers of deep green and silvery-green markings.
Turn a leaf over and there’s another surprise waiting underneath, with rich burgundy-purple colouring adding even more contrast. Like other members of the prayer plant family, its leaves can gently change position throughout the day as they respond to the light.
Give ‘Medallion’ warmth, humidity and consistent care and it will reward you with some seriously impressive foliage.

OUR THOUGHTS
‘Medallion’ manages to make both sides of its leaves worth looking at. The tops are covered in layers of deep and silvery green that almost look painted on, while underneath you get that gorgeous burgundy-purple surprise. Add the gentle daily movement of a prayer plant and there's always something going on.
GROW WITH CONFIDENCE
Looking After Your Plant
Watering
Keep the growing medium lightly and consistently moist, allowing the surface to begin drying before watering again. Avoid both prolonged drought and permanently saturated soil. Calatheas can be sensitive to minerals in tap water, so rainwater or filtered water can be helpful if persistent browning or crispy leaf edges develop.
Light
Give ‘Medallion’ bright, indirect light to support healthy growth and maintain its striking foliage pattern. Avoid harsh direct sunlight, which can scorch the leaves and fade their markings. It can tolerate somewhat softer light, although growth may become slower.
Humidity & Temperature
Calathea ‘Medallion’ appreciates high humidity and warm, stable conditions. Keep it away from radiators, cold draughts and sudden temperature changes. Dry air can contribute to crispy leaf edges, so a naturally humid room can be particularly helpful.
Feeding
Feed with a balanced houseplant fertiliser around once a month during active growth in spring and summer, following the manufacturer's instructions. Calatheas can be sensitive to excess fertiliser, so avoid overfeeding and reduce or stop feeding during autumn and winter.
Repotting & Growth
Calathea ‘Medallion’ develops into a dense, clumping plant with new foliage emerging from the base. Repot when noticeably root-bound, moving up only slightly in pot size and using a light, moisture-retentive but well-draining houseplant mix. Remove old, yellowing or badly damaged leaves at the base when needed.
Pet Safety
Calathea ‘Medallion’ is generally considered non-toxic to cats and dogs, making it a great option for pet-friendly homes. As with any houseplant, it's still best to discourage pets from chewing or damaging the foliage.
A NOTE FROM US
Medallion likes consistency. Keep it comfortably warm, give it plenty of humidity and aim for lightly moist soil rather than letting it completely dry out between drinks. If those gorgeous leaves start getting crispy around the edges, humidity and water quality are two of the first things we'd check.
