Dark, trailing and beautifully patterned, Black Pagoda Lipstick Plant is a wonderfully unusual houseplant with elongated green leaves covered in striking darker markings and contrasting burgundy-purple tones beneath.

Its cascading stems make it perfect for hanging pots and high shelves, where the patterned foliage can really show itself off. Given the right conditions, mature plants can also produce tubular flowers, adding another little surprise to an already characterful plant.

OUR THOUGHTS

Black Pagoda doesn't really need flowers to earn its place. Its long leaves are covered in beautiful contrasting patterns, with darker tones underneath adding another dimension as the stems begin to trail. We love plants that make you look twice, and this one manages it without needing flashy variegation. Put it somewhere high and let the foliage do the talking.

GROW WITH CONFIDENCE

Looking After Your Plant

Watering

Allow the upper portion of the growing medium to begin drying before watering thoroughly, then allow all excess water to drain away. Avoid keeping the roots permanently wet or allowing the pot to sit in water. Water somewhat less frequently during cooler months when growth slows.

Light

Give Black Pagoda plenty of bright, indirect light for strong growth and to show off its beautiful leaf patterning. A little gentle morning or evening sun can be beneficial, but avoid prolonged harsh midday sunlight, which can scorch the foliage.

Humidity & Temperature

Black Pagoda appreciates medium to high humidity and warm, stable conditions. It can adapt to normal household humidity, but additional humidity can help support healthy foliage and growth. Keep it away from cold draughts, radiators and sudden temperature changes.

Feeding

Feed with a balanced houseplant fertiliser around once a month during active growth in spring and summer, following the manufacturer's instructions. Reduce feeding during autumn and winter when growth naturally slows.

Repotting & Growth

Black Pagoda naturally develops long, trailing stems and looks fantastic in a hanging pot or positioned high enough for its growth to cascade. Repot when noticeably root-bound, moving up only slightly in pot size and using a light, airy and well-draining houseplant mix. Longer stems can be trimmed to encourage fuller, bushier growth.

Pet Safety

Black Pagoda Lipstick Plant is generally considered non-toxic to cats and dogs, making it a good choice for pet-friendly homes. As with any houseplant, it's still best to discourage pets from chewing or playing with the foliage.

A NOTE FROM US

Black Pagoda is one to put somewhere you can see both sides of those incredible leaves. Give it plenty of bright indirect light, let the soil dry a little between drinks and let those stems tumble. The foliage is more than enough reason to grow it, so any flowers that eventually appear are really just a bonus.
